One way of counterbalancing layers of possibility in Joyce and Duchamp’s writing is to go backwards in order to come forwards in text and imagery so that what is ‘passed’ and already a site can be complicated by what is ‘next’ and then becomes a site in relation to the other elements of the picture. It is worth quoting Gilles Deleuze: “Herein, perhaps, lies the secret: to bring into existence and not to judge. If it is so disgusting to judge, it is not because everything is of equal value, but on the contrary because what has value can be made or distinguished only by defying judgment. What expert judgment, in art, could ever bear on the work to come?” The “immanence” of the creative act and creative activity and its power to express this rather than to Judge what has been in the picture (or what is to come) adds yet another layer of possibilities for expression while also retaining the privilege of tradition: that is to say that blueprints are exactly open to inspection, to mind-change and actual-change.
